This one checks all the boxes for me.

Cool old school brand

automatic

understated functional aesthetics

not thousands of dollars

Kinja'd!!!

This is the titanium version which is a lot more expensive which is odd. $850 on amazon or the non titanium silver version for $395 !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

titanium must be expensive

That is a noice watch broski. Much approval. I'm theoretically saving money for a Tag Hauer Carrera Chronograph. I've wanted one as long as I wanted a Land Rover, so since about 8 or 9 years old.

That is gorgeous. Myself, I'm looking at one of these, but the chrono is quite tempting as well.

One time when I was wearing a suit a watch salesman actually gave me the time of day and let me try on a tag monaco

Kinja'd!!!

I guess he didnt know poor people wear suits sometimes.

It was huge and flashy and I liked how it felt heavy and luxurious if that makes sense. Don't know if I would buy one. I just want to buy it because McQueen. (I am trying to make this phraseology happen)

I keep looking for a watch to replace my 20 year old Seiko but they're all so huge or shiny these days that I can't find one I like. That one is pretty close to what I'm looking for.

Oh man, that is a total day brightener.

I wonder what percentage of Oppos wear watches. Most of us are a dying breed; driving for pleasure, intimate knowledge of our cars, watch wearers.

Well I mos def fit that description! I nerd out on watches its convenient to have the time on my wrist. I love the noise and ticking motion and mechanism of an automatic watch. I like things that are machines I guess. Also they are just great looking.

My wife, when she was still my girlfriend, bought me a really nice simple skeleton back automatic Bulova. Total keeper.

My dad wore a Seiko divers 300m watch during Libya bombing in the 80s sending FA-18's off on sorties, he wore it again during the Gulf, and he wore during the invasion of Iraq. Shortly before I left for my first deployment to Ramadi in 2005, my father gave me this watch. I wore it through thousands of hours of combat patrols, genuine SYP (shit your pants) moments during that tour, and continued to where on my next deployment to Fallujah, and subsequently Musa Qalah and Peshawar, Afghanistan. The old girl finally had enough after that last one, I had her repaired and cleaned by certified Seiko clocksmith several times, but the age finally got to her and unlike cars, you can't just swap in parts to replace bad ones. I plan on mounting it on a plaque for my father's birthday this year.

I really want this watch. I have no idea if its a quality piece but I like the way I look. I love watches and need to get a new batteries for a few of mine. Its weird 3/4 of my watch collection batteries died around the same time.

That's beyond awesome. My watch isn't that great, Seiko Titanium, and it hasn't endured 1/10 of what that one did, but it's kept excellent time and kept ticking for all of these years so I can't complain.

Rule of thumb is you should be spending at least $700 on an automatic, otherwise the battery version will be better. It's a nice looking watch. Also, modern day Hamilton is not the same company as old school Hamilton. They're owned by Swatch now, which is basically the VAG of the watch world.

Battery version better how? Accuracy?

Kinja'd!!! DipodomysDeserti > Frank Grimes

Kinja'd!!!1

Battery powered quartz watches will always be more accurate than automatic watches (even the very expensive ones).

Higher quality movements. A $400 auto watch isn't bad, but it's going to be on the lower end of the quality scale, whereas a $400 quartz is going to be on the higher end of a quartz movement. $700 is kind of the sweet spot where you can get a very good quality automatic. Of course pricing fluctuates depending on what deal you can find so it's not a hard fast rule.

I will never buy an expensive quartz watch and probably never any quartz watch. I love looking at the gear and crap of any auto and that ticking sound and smoother second hand movement makes me love them.

I love mechanical watches too.

Another off-beat watch choice is the Ball watch; here's one example:

Kinja'd!!!

One of the cool things about them is they have tiny phosphorescent tubes that glow in the dark for 25 years...they look cool.

They have a bunch of models, which you can see on their crummy website:

I'm with you on that. I love mechanical watches. Tissot makes some nice classically Mechanicals that aren't too pricey.

About $1,500, but you can find a nice used example for around $1k.

I had some of the movement replaced during the second round of repairs, and I guess she still works theoretically, but she won't hold time for more than 1 day at a time. If I only wanted to one watch forever then it would be ok, but if I took it off overnight it would be hours behind by morning. I guess if I maybe wrote to Seiko and shipped them the watch maybe they could fully repair it, but I can't imagine what that would cost.
